Three suspected custom security officials working at the Uganda-DR Congo boarder in Arua have been revealed due to failure of sharing Shs36 million bribe requested from a Congolese gold vendor.
Suspects include a one Francis Odongo, working with (ESO), James Opolot, a crime intelligence official and Felix Ezangu, the boarder security official all joined to Vurra customs boarder point.
Primer reports show that the charged, helped the passage of a Congolese gold vendor to bypass the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) protocol at the border post on march 24. The charged purportedly blocked the Gold dealer prior to crossing the border, requested a bribe of $10,000 and, surprisingly, gave escort security up to Arua city for the dealer to sell his bits of gold.
A security official who favored not to be revealed let this journalists know that the denounced people shared the pay off they got from the gold seller on march 25 from Devine touch hotel, a couple of meters from the Vurra customs line post.
Arua resident district commissioner Godfrey Okiswa says that the matter became known when the revealed culprits disagreed on sharing the bribe.
“We possibly came to find out about this when there was a fight and the sharing of the cash that they might have been compromised with,” said Okiswa.
In the mean time, Vurra sub-region chairperson Joel Pariyo narrated that instances of corruption by security agents are widespread at the border and requested the local security committee to mediate. The culprits declined to address the media.
