Zafaran Condemns Male Musicians For Sexual Exploitation of Female Artists

Singer Zafaran has lashed out at male musicians for exploiting their budding female counterparts sexually. Zafaran, real name Josephine Nakyoonyi, used her account on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, to issue her warning to male musicians doing this.

“As a female artist in Uganda, I am disheartened by what male artists take us through before we work with them,” Zafaran.

In the post, Zafaran went ahead to show disappointment in how male artists ask for sex in return for a collaboration. While wondering if that is what other female artists are doing, the Swangz Avenue singer made a cry for the stakeholders in the music industry to do better.

Our music industry should be a place of mutual respect and professional integrity, not a marketplace for exploitation.

In addition, the Enafuya hit maker pledged to work with all stakeholders in the industry to end this exploitation.According to Zafaran, artists, DJs, and producers should all work together to create a music industry that values talent. This, she believes, will ensure artists collaborate seamlessly without issues of coercion and misconduct.

I stand with every woman who has faced similar challenges and call upon all of us to demand better.

The conversation about sexual exploitation and assault in the Ugandan music industry is not a new one. Over the years, reports of sexual assault by industry players, including creators, talent managers, and fans, have made rounds on both print and digital media. In most of these reports, the most affected people are the female artists.

Some of these violations, especially those by fans, usually happen in the glaring view of cameras at musical shows. Top city artists such as Winnie Nwagi, Lydia Jasmine, among others, have been victims of these. However, many of the violations happen behind closed doors throughout the process of creating music.
