The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has condemned statements by legislators led by Speaker of Parliament Anita Among that seemed to condone corruption in Lwengo District.
Over the weekend, the Speaker led a delegation of MPs to launch the Sentaayi Foundation in Lwengo District. While speaking to the Lwengo residents, Speaker Among confirmed her support for their embattled woman MP, Cissy Namujju, who is facing corruption charges.
Cissy Namujju was charged alongside Bunyole East MP Yusuf Mutembuli and Busiki County’s Paul Akamba at the Anti-Corruption Court on June 12.
The three are accused of soliciting 20% of the Uganda Human Rights Commission budget to facilitate its passing by Parliament.
But according to Speaker Among, Namujju should be pardoned since she shared proceeds of corruption with Lwengo residents.
Rakai Woman MP Juliet Kinyamatama and Kasambya County’s David Kabanda were other MPs to pledge their allegiance to their embattled colleagues.
However, the remarks undermine efforts by various stakeholders in the fight against corruption.
ULS President Bernard Oundo says such reckless statements are a setback in the fight to promote integrity and accountability in public administration.
“The National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy XXVI mandate that all public offices are held in trust for the people, and all persons in positions of leadership and responsibility must be answerable to the people.” said Bernard Oundo.
Bernard Oundo also called upon the concerned MPs to retract their statements. According to Oundo, this will reaffirm their commitment to fight corruption.
Similarly, the ULS President made a plea to all Ugandans to rise up in the fight against corruption.
