Three Killed in Bobi Wine Masaka Procession Accident

At least three people were killed and numerous others critically injured in a devastating crash involving the procession of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi on the Kampala-Masaka Highway on Friday morning, according to police reports.

The incident, which occurred in Nsangi, involved two vehicles—a Toyota Hiace and a Toyota Noah—and three motorcycles. Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire provided details of the tragic event.

“While the president of the National Unity Platform was in procession to Masaka, the Toyota Hiace, registration number UBQ 691Q, collided with the Toyota Noah, registration number UAT 157A, which was part of the same convoy,” Owoyesigyire stated. The impact caused the Toyota Noah to then crash into three boda bodas that were also part of the procession.

Police confirmed that two people, including a rider and a passenger, died instantly at the scene. A third victim succumbed to their injuries while being transported to Mulago for treatment. “The bodies have been transported to the City Mortuary in Mulago for postmortem,” Owoyesigyire added, noting that investigations into the accident have commenced.

This tragic accident comes on the heels of police clearance for mobilization meetings for the opposition National Unity Platform. There have been previous warnings from the police about the behavior of Kyagulanyi’s supporters during processions, highlighting concerns over indiscipline and road safety.

On Friday, police reiterated their call for NUP supporters to exercise caution while on the road to prevent such tragedies in the future.

As investigations continue, the police are urging all participants in political processions to adhere to safety guidelines and regulations. The accident has cast a somber shadow over the day’s events, bringing to light the risks associated with large, moving gatherings on busy highways.

The community mourns the loss of life and the suffering of those injured in this horrific accident. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available from the ongoing police investigations.
