The family of Tamale Mirundi has asked the public to forgive the deceased political analyst for any misdeeds.
Tamale Mirundi succumbed to pneumonia on Tuesday night at Kisubi Hospital, where he had been admitted for a month.
Although the former Presidential Press Secretary openly attacked the Catholic Church, St. Gyaviira Parish Catholic Church in Bunamwaya held a requiem mass for him on Thursday afternoon. During the mass, Mirundi’s brother, John Ssali Ssembuya, expressed his gratitude to the church for allowing the mass. Ssali acknowledged that the family was skeptical because of their brother’s public spats.
It should be remembered that when former MP and comedian Kato Lubwama passed on in 2023, the Catholic Church declined a request to hold a requiem mass for him. They cited Kato’s public allegiance to witchcraft and informed the family they wouldn’t. Similar to Lubwama, Tamale Mirundi on many occasions castigated the church and made known his belief in witchcraft.
“Can someone who says that he should be buried with his head out be taken seriously?” Ssembuya.
Similarly, Ssembuya revealed plans to formally seek forgiveness from the Kingdom of Buganda. Through his political commentary, Mirundi, a Muganda, was usually at loggerheads with the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga. On several occasions, he accused the Katikkiro of crimes ranging from corruption to abuse of office.
Another issue that put Mirundi at odds with his Kingdom was his role in the 2008 Buganda riots. As the President’s spokesperson then, his robust defense of the government’s blockade of Kabaka’s visit to Kayunga rubbed the Kingdom sourly. Ssembuya also expressed concern that the family hasn’t received any messages from the Kingdom. During Mirundi’s media career, he worked at the Kingdom’s CBS FM.
“We have not received any messages from Mengo. Maybe they are still angry.” Ssembuya.
Ssembuya clarified a statement attributed to Mirundi about not wanting his body taken to church after death. He explained that it was taken out of context and that Mirundi was a servant of the church.
