Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, lashed out at a corruption syndicate at Parliament that’s trying to blackmail him for his activism.
Over the last couple of weeks, there has been what appears to be a systematic campaign against the Nakawa West MP.
The key message of the campaign has been allegations of Joel Ssenyonyi taking bribes when he was Chairperson of COSASE. Particularly, it is alleged that he took shs 1.7 billion from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority. During his tenure, he investigated the authority on counts of corruption of irregular job appointments.
“It is no wonder the Parliamentary Commission quietly holds meetings without informing me, simply because of the shady deals they continue to cut in those meetings. That’s why you hear these fellows shamelessly saying that it’s okay to steal as long as you share with the voters!” – Joel Ssenyonyi.
However, the report was never tabled in Parliament as Speaker Anita Among faulted Ssenyonyi for leaking it to the media. Since then, journalist Dean Lubowa Saava has been on numerous platforms castigating Ssenyonyi for corruption.
However, Ssenyonyi believes these campaigns are part of a broader campaign by corrupt parliamentarians attempting to discredit him.
“You can’t say shs1bn today, tomorrow shs1.4bn, then the other day shs1.7bn. Be organized even as you spew out your propaganda. That’s what the thieves in Parliament whom we’re exposing have resorted to through their propagandists.” Joel Ssenyonyi.
Additionally, he challenged them to provide evidence to this effect. He also hinted at plans to hold staged protests against him.Despite these challenges, he reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the fight against corruption.
“Nonetheless, we shall continue to speak out against corruption by the thieves in Parliament whom you all know very well.” he stated.
