Sseggona: I Told Bobi Wine To Contest For Presidency In 2021

Medard Ssegona

Busiro East MP Medard Sseggona has revealed that National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu contested for the presidency in the 2021 polls because he told him to do so.

Sseggona made the revelation while addressing members of NUP about the division in the party. Over the last six months, it has been an open secret that the relationship between Kyagulanyi and his number two, Mathias Mpuuga, had hit the rocks. What started as a rumor after NUP didn’t renew Mpuuga’s term as Leader of Opposition in Parliament last year was proved this year when he was fired as Deputy President for Buganda Region.

This followed a revelation by citizen activists that Nyendo-Mukungwe MP and other Parliamentary Commissioners had received Shs 1.7 billion as service awards. These included Esther Afoyochan (Zombo District Woman – NRM), Prossy Akampulira (Rubanda District Woman – NRM), Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central – NRM), and Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe – NUP).

In the arrangement, the three NRM legislators took home Shs 400 million each. On the other hand, while the former LOP banked Shs 500 million in a one-off personal service award. This sparked outbursts in Kavule as the leadership maintained this was against their values.

Ssegona says he’s on both Mpuuga and Bobi Wine sides

Much as Court ruled that the Commissioners didn’t break the law earlier this week, members of the party are reportedly aligning themselves in factions of either for the former LOP or the party president. However, Sseggona believes that such decisions only divide the party and confirmed he’s on no side. Despite openly defending Mpuuga over the matter, he maintained his loyalty to Kyagulanyi.

“You people who feel you love Kyagulanyi so much, where were you when I picked him from Arua? Why didn’t you come when I picked him from Gulu in the midst of gunshots? Where were you when I picked him from Luuka?” – Medard Sseggona.

He also revealed that it was his genius and bravery that saved the party from being taken over by the state. Ever since officially launching the NUP in 2018, the Kavule leadership has been involved in court battles over the ownership of the party.

Former president Moses Kibalama has repeatedly taken the leadership to court alleging their reign is illegal. But Sseggona, who is a member of the NUP legal team, maintained that he is going to reconcile the party.

“Did Kyagulanyi ever tell you who told him to contest for the presidency? Where were you people that think you love him so much then?” – Medard Sseggona.
