President Museveni Encourages Youth to Marry at 23

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has advised youths to get married at 23 years old. The President said this during the first ever Inter-Religious Family Festival at Kololo Independence Grounds.

The event, hosted by the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, was meant to advocate for God’s presence in the family. It was hosted under the theme “Celebrating Family, Faith, Freedom: One Family under God for African Renaissance.”

“You should get married between 22-23. That’s when the time is right. After, you get a family and plan.” said President Museveni.

The President directed this message to the teenagers, advising them to not rush into marriage. He also called upon them to not involve themselves in sexual activities and to be patient.

President Museveni told them that once they get married, they would have the freedom to do as they please. Additionally, the President also told them about the advantages of abstinence. This, he said, can protect them from sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS and early pregnancies.

The President also cast a bright image of a future for the teenagers should they listen to his advice. He told them that early pregnancies and STDs can alter the trajectory of their lives to a free fall.

President Museveni preached wealth creation

Additionally, President Museveni used the event to preach a message of wealth creation.

“As a family, you must have wealth. If you have a head of a family that isn’t a wealth creator, then don’t refer to him as that. We call those ones vagabonds.” said President Museveni.

He also advocated for the preservation of African family values. In a world that is quickly turning a blind eye to the traditional way of life, the President expressed his concern to the youth.

He asked them to always care for their loved ones, learn about their cultures, and defend their traditions.

“Even traditionally, you had to learn how to fight. Some people also learnt other skills like Emyooga, such as skills, and farming. These religions didn’t come to replace our base but to enrich it. They added value to whatever we were doing.” said President Museveni.

He also pledged government support to the Inter-Religious Council in their message about the traditional family base.
