Police Suspends NUP’s Mobilisation Tour

Police have suspended National Unity Platform’s countrywide tours with immediate effect. This development was announced by the Force’s spokesperson Fred Enanga on Friday evening following a motor accident that claimed three lives at Maya.

This was as the NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, and his entourage traveled to their Masaka rally on Friday morning.

“As the government agency mandated to protect life and property, keep law and order, the police management has decided to halt any further consultative activities of NUP as a party with immediate effect until this matter is conclusively investigated and resolved,” Enanga said.

Police had earlier said the accident happened when a Toyota Hiace, which was part of NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi’s procession to Masaka, knocked a Toyota Noah, which in turn rammed into three motorcycles. Two people died on the spot, while the third succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital for treatment.

This development comes barely a week since the Police and NUP came to a consensus following a meeting at Police Naguru headquarters attended by leadership from both entities. In their Monday 27th meeting, both Police and NUP agreed to maintain discipline before, during, and after their mobilization rallies; this was not the case. However, Police accuse the Kavule party of violating all these agreements on top of blocking roads during their processions.

“We appeal to the public to remain vigilant, observe law and order. Whoever acts contrary to public order and safety shall be held accountable under the laws of Uganda. The safety of Ugandans will always remain our priority,” said Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga.

This is only the latest hiccup in NUP’s mobilization tours that have lasted hardly two weeks. Last week, Police deployed heavily, blocking their entrance to Kamuli and Bugweri, prompting the party to hold a meeting with law enforcers.
