PLU Urges Patience as MP Mawanda Faces Shs 160 Billion Corruption Charges

Patriotic League Uganda (PLU) has asked for patience as their head of Discipline, MP Michael Mawanda, faces corruption charges.

In a statement issued by their General Secretary, David Kawanda, the outfit acknowledged awareness of the happenings.

“As a leadership, we are aware Mawanda Michael Maranga, their director of mobilization and head of disciplinary committee,” said Kawanda.

MP Kawanda went on to express the PLU’s condemnation of corruption. However, he asked the public to follow the tenets of the law, which ask for suspects to be treated as innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.

The Kasambya County MP also expressed his confidence in the country’s judicial system.

“We also trust that the law shall be applied uniformly and that all those involved in every manner of corruption shall be brought to book,” stated the PLU.

PLU Praise President Museveni For Fighting Corruption

In similar faith, praise was heaped onto President Yoweri Museveni for his commitment to eradicating corruption in Uganda.

Over the last couple of weeks, the President has been castigating corruption among civil servants. This started when he announced that he had evidence of a racket of corruption involving Members of Parliament and staff from the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development.

Since the President’s declaration, five MPs have been arrested on corruption-related charges in under a fortnight. These include Bunyole East MP Yusuf Mutembuli, Lwengo DWR Cissy Namujju, and Busiki County’s Paul Akamba.

The trio allegedly solicited 20% of the Uganda Human Rights Commission budget in order to influence its enhancement.

Paul Akamba joined Igara East MP Michael Mawanda and Elgon County’s Mudimu Wamukunyu in the dock in the Anti-Corruption Court on Friday, 21st June. The trio were charged with corruption in relation to shs 160 billion paid out irregularly to cooperative societies.

These societies are said to have been affected by wars for a period of over 30 years.

“We pledge our total commitment to His Excellency the President as far as fighting corruption is concerned,” said David Kabanda, PLU.
