Parliament To Resume Plenary Amid Youth Led Anti Corruption March

Parliament of Uganda will hold plenary this afternoon after a month-long recess. Today’s plenary coincides with the planned March to Parliament.

The March to Parliament, organized by youths, is a protest against the exorbitant levels of corruption in government. Particularly, the youths are demanding accountability from Parliament, where up to five MPs are in prison on corruption-related charges.

Core to the demands of the youth is the resignation of Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. However, the House looks unfazed by this and expects to have business running as normal.

Parliament expects the 5th seating of the 1st meeting of the 4th session of the 11th Parliament of Uganda to kick off at 2:00 pm.Top of the agenda is the designation of members to sectoral committees. This is in accordance with rules 187 and 188 of the house’s rules of procedure. It should be remembered that on June 19th, the chief whips recalled heads of sectoral Committees.

Parliament procedure today

Additionally, there will be laying of about nine papers on the floor of Parliament. Some of these include:

The Law Revision (Printing and Publication of the Sixth Revised Edition of the Principal Laws of Uganda) Instrument, 2024. This will be done by the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwabuka.

Parliamentary Pension Scheme Bi-Annual Report for the Period Ended December 31, 2023. This will be laid by one of the embattled Parliamentary Commissioners the youth want gone.

Assessment Report on Compliance of 20 Development Programme Budget Framework Papers with Gender and Equity Requirements FY 2024/25. This will be laid by the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Among.

Assessment Report on Compliance of Ministerial Policy Statements with Gender and Equity Requirements FY 2024/25 . Similarly, Honourable Betty Amongi will lay this.

The Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority Annual Performance Report for FY 2022/23. The Finance Minister Matia Kasaija will lay this.
