Otafiire Warns Against Glorifying Corrupt Leaders

Minister of Internal Affairs Kahinda Otafiire has called upon Ugandans to stop cuddling corrupt leaders and call them out.

The retired army General was speaking at the graduation ceremony of Kampala International University on Saturday, July 14.

Otafiire launched an artillery towards leaders who justify corruption by attaching it to service delivery.

It should be remembered that Speaker of Parliament Anita Among recently praised Lwengo District Woman MP Cissy Namujju for sharing alleged stolen money with voters. The Speaker’s sentiments at an event in Lwengo District were supported by a couple of other MPs.Cissy Namujju is currently in Luzira Prison over charges of corruption.

The President [Museveni] has heard your cries and as you know, when a child misbehaves, you beat and say go back and do something good.

However, Otafiire notes that this kind of reasoning is unacceptable. He also warned that nobody worth their salt should condone corruption.

“You cannot steal and then come and share with us, saying that you stole on our behalf. Did we send [vote for] you to steal? If you are in leadership, you must be upright.” – Kahinda Otafiire.

He also tasked all aspirants of leadership positions to be accommodative to accountability calls. Otafiire cautioned leaders to stop rubbishing demands for accountability. He was particularly concerned with leaders who think demands for accountability amount to hate speech.

Otafiire warns

“You are digressing from Democratic Principles to rule by the law. Our philosophy is rule of the law not rule by the law.” – Kahinda Otafiire.

The outspoken minister didn’t mince his words, saying that many leaders are digressing from the principles that took them to the Bush. Otafiire said that the NRA bush war was sustained by their resolve to establish a democratic country.

He also noted that their compatriots didn’t lose lives so that corrupt leaders are glorified.Otafiire then tasked the public, especially the youth, to call out inequality. He said this inequality has contributed to the massive brain drain in Africa. He also wondered what else motivates youth to leave resource-rich Africa for resource-poor Europe.
