Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja tasked State Minister for Internal Affairs David Muhoozi to ensure the President’s directive stopping the confiscation of boda bodas is respected.
“The President directed that all the boda bodas of these young people be returned to them. I am wondering why this directive isn’t being followed. And so let me direct, the Minister of Internal Affairs who is here, Gen. Muhoozi, to prevail over your Police Officers and have the boda bodas given to our people.” said Nabbanja.
The Prime Minister expressed her disappointment in the Police while responding to pleas by Mubende Municipality MP Bashir Lubega for government intervention in the issue. Lubega pinned Traffic Police for terrorizing boda bodas in Mubende. He said the officers illegitimately confiscate the motorcycles in contravention of the laws.
To Lubega’s dismay, the officers fleece the riders for bribes in order to release their motorcycles.
“The boda bodas everywhere in the country are victims of terror from Traffic Police. They descend on them with a lot of wrath to the extent that many of them have abandoned their boda bodas at Police posts, and you can see them full. On those roadblocks, they are just collecting money; they have sucked them up to the bone marrow. What plans do you have to rein in this impunity and terror from Traffic Police?” said Lubega.
Boda Boda era of hope
In June, Uganda Police announced plans to release thousands of unclaimed boda bodas that are in their custody. The announcement, which was to take place throughout the country, was received with jubilation.
