Uganda Cranes striker Muhammad Shaban has left Premiership side Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) FC.
The lanky forward announced his departure from the Lugogo-based side via his account on X, formerly Twitter.
Shaban joins a huge list of Ugandan players that run down contracts with their clubs, making them available as free agents. He leaves the club after a second stint that lasted just two years. Following the completion of the last season, KCCA engaged in contract negotiations with the striker, but this has been futile.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure from this incredible club after two unforgettable seasons.” Muhammad Shaban stated.
Additionally, Shaban expressed his gratitude to the KCCA fans, whom he said stood by him. He also reserved high praise for the KCCA management and coaching staff.
Muhammad Shaban brief profile
Muhammad Shaban shot to fame in the 2010s as he played for St Mary’s Secondary School Kitende football team. Following his tremendous exploits in the secondary schools competition, he joined Onduparaka FC. Under the stewardship of Allan Kabonge, Shaban and Onduparaka lit up the big league.
His goals guided the Arua-based club to premiership football when they were promoted from the Big League in 2016. The outspoken forward maintained his form in the league, netting 13 goals for Onduparaka in his debut season.
Following a blockbuster debut season in the premiership, Shaban signed a big-money three-year deal with KCCA. However, he served KCCA for only one season before they cashed in when Moroccan side Raja Casablanca came calling. Shaban had a forgettable experience in Morocco during the 2018/2019 season and left after just one season.
He returned to familiar ground in St Mary’s Kitende, where he signed for Vipers SC. However, his time at Vipers wasn’t memorable as he nursed a disturbing injury. After two seasons, he returned home to Arua with Onduparaka FC. He played for Onduparaka in the 2021/2022 season before joining KCCA in August 2022.
Despite a dismal performance by KCCA, the forward managed 17 league goals, winning the golden boot last season. Similarly, he returned to the national team fold under new Cranes Coach Paul Put.
Much as KCCA has already signed seven players during this transfer window, Shaban’s exit is a big blow for Abdallah Mubiru. Shaban’s destination is most likely outside the country, with Kenya’s Gor Mahia linked.
