MPs Mutembuli and Namujju Denied Bail, Akamba Rearrested

MPs Akamba, Namujju and Mutebuli

MPs Yusuf Mutembuli and Cissy Namujju have been denied bail by the Anti-Corruption Court. Meanwhile, their colleague Paul Akamba was granted bail as the trio continues to face corruption charges.

Mr. Akamba, who was released on a cash bond of Shs13 million, had his sureties post a non-cash bond of Shs100 million each. Although these conditions were met by Akamba, he was bundled into a van to an unknown destination.

Bunyole East MP Mutembuli and Lwengo Woman MP Namujju were remanded to Luzira Prison. They will be at Luzira until June 17th when they are expected in court for the hearing of their case.

Mutembuli’s denial of bail stemmed from the fact that one of his sureties did not meet all the necessary requirements. Minsa Namukose failed to present a letter confirming her employment as a development officer in Mukono.

On the other hand, Namujju failed to provide a letter confirming her residence. It should be remembered that police raided the residences of the three MPs on June 11 as part of the investigation.

Both MPs have been remanded to Luzira Prison until June 17 when their case will be heard again.

The three MPs were charged with corruption before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala on Wednesday 12th 2024.

According to their charge sheet, the MPs allegedly solicited from Ms. Mariam Wangadya, the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, a cut from the entity’s budget on May 13, 2024.

Under this understanding, the MPs would pocket 20% of an enhanced Human Rights Commission budget.

Under the guidance of their lawyers led by Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, the three MPs pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The rearrest of MP Akamba has sparked a conversation about the code of conduct of the security personnel.
