Singer Lydia Jazmine has applauded her management for protecting her from sexual harassment.
Jazmine, real name Lydia Nabawanuka, confirmed she had never been a victim of sexual harassment while appearing on NTV’s The Beat Show.
While responding to a question posed by host Lynda Ddane, the “You and Me” singer acknowledged that she is aware that it’s a common occurrence in the music industry.
However, Jazmine is thankful to her management that handled her as she stepped into the industry. The managerial team comprised top city producer Bushington, real name George Kago, and Ronnie Mulindwa, among others.
According to Jazmine, the team always made sure that all she did was show up at studios for voicing. They would do the work of approaching the industry players for her.
However, this is not the case for other female artists who are not privileged enough to have protective management. These artists have to approach industry players like producers, DJs, and promoters on their own.
This usually opens them up to the predatory tendencies of some of these stakeholders.
During the show, Jazmine sent out words of encouragement to the artists, telling them not to fall victim.
“I want to tell all girls starting out in this music field. Let nobody use you. If it isn’t your time to shine, they will use you even 1,000 times but you still won’t shine,” said Lydia Jazmine.
She also encouraged them to keep churning out good music consistently and not be under pressure to do collaborations. Jazmine believes that once they do this, the top artists and producers will contact them to do collaborations.
In such a situation, the possibility of getting harassed will be reduced because collaborations will be under their terms.
The conversation about sexual exploitation and assault in the Ugandan music industry is not a new one.
Over the years, reports of sexual assault by industry players, including creators, talent managers, and fans, have made rounds in both print and digital media. In most of these reports, the most affected people are female artists.
Some of these violations, especially those by fans, usually happen in the glaring view of cameras at musical shows. Top city artists such as Winnie Nwagi, Lydia Jazmine, among others, have been victims of these. However, many of the violations happen behind closed doors throughout the process of creating music.
