About Us:

Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) operates independently within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University, with a mission to strengthen health systems in Africa, emphasizing infectious diseases, through research and capacity development. With operations across Uganda and several African countries, IDI manages multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health, and training, boasting a staff of over 1,000 professionals.

About the SHEDS Program:

The SHEDS program addresses the burgeoning challenge of handling vast amounts of data generated by technologies like mobile phones, high-throughput genomic sequencing, and electronic health records. Data Science (DS), including Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI), offers a pathway to harnessing and enhancing this data for meaningful insights. However, the technical nature of DS risks exacerbating gender disparities in STEM fields, particularly in Uganda.
