About the SHEDS Program:
The SHEDS program addresses the burgeoning challenge of handling vast amounts of data generated by technologies like mobile phones, high-throughput genomic sequencing, and electronic health records. Data Science (DS), including Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI), offers a pathway to harnessing and enhancing this data for meaningful insights. However, the technical nature of DS risks exacerbating gender disparities in STEM fields, particularly in Uganda. This program aims to skill Ugandan women in data science and bioinformatics, identifying and overcoming barriers to their participation in STEM, and facilitating the translation of their skills into biomedical and public health practice.
