Chief of Defence Forces General Kainerugaba Muhoozi has warned youths belonging to the Patriotic League Uganda (PLU) against marching to Parliament.
Muhoozi made the declaration as the chairperson of the PLU, a civic organization that he leads. The organization had been vocal on issues of national service, corruption, and the frugal expenditure of public resources before President Yoweri Museveni appointed Gen. Muhoozi CDF in March.
Following his appointment, the General, who had become famous for his unhinged posts on X, had gone silent on the app. However, on Saturday night he rolled back the time as he sent out numerous tweets in a short span. According to Muhoozi, the march to Parliament will not bring an end to corruption.
He also informed youths that his PLU team knows how to fight corruption. Muhoozi pledges that the PLU will put an end to the vice in the country.
Corruption in Parliament
Currently, PLU’s own head of Discipline, MP Michael Mawanda, is facing charges related to corruption. Mawanda was charged alongside Paul Akamba of Busiki County and Elgon County’s Mudimu Wamukunyu by the Anti-Corruption Court on Friday, June 21. The trio were charged with corruption in relation to shs 160 billion paid out irregularly to cooperative societies. These societies are said to have been affected by wars for a period of over 30 years.
Their arrests stemmed from a revelation by President Museveni that he had evidence of a corruption racket involving members of Parliament and staff at the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. Since the President’s revelations, five MPs have been remanded to prison, prompting a section of youths to plan a march to Parliament in protest.
The mild protests that broke out on July 23rd led to the arrest of over 100 individuals. These were majorly charged with common nuisance. Over 20 of protesters have since been granted bail.
President Museveni condemned the protest calling them an initiative of western super powers to destabilize Uganda.
