Opposition party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has launched a digital membership registration platform for its cadres ahead of the 2026 polls. The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) chaired by party president Patrick Amuriat Oboi rolled out the program on Monday, 10th July.
However, this new development comes with a rise in membership fees from shs 1,000 to shs 5,000. This is for the lowest membership package.
“We don’t want to remain analog yet people are progressing with the digital transformation in this age.” – Amuriat.
The Najjanankumbi leader also used the opportunity to issue a stern warning to party members affiliated with the Katonga faction. Amuriat said these will not have access to the digital platform.
However, they are required to denounce their Katonga road ties if they want to register as party members.
“What we expect from them (Katonga faction) is to stop the noise and put their tools between their legs.” – Amuriat.
In contrast to Amuriat, the FDC vice president for Eastern Uganda, Margaret Wokuri, preached a reconciliation gospel.
“You should put into consideration the fact that both the Najjanankumbi and Katonga road factions have their own grievances.” – Wokuri.
Wokuri believes that if all the stakeholders introspect and accept their shortcomings, then the FDC stands a chance to recover from the turmoil. She believes the misunderstandings have opened the eyes of all FDC members, showing them that their strength lies in unity.
History of Misunderstandings
In July 2023, the country woke up to a full-blown war amongst top leaders and members of one of the leading parties, FDC. These misunderstandings were shouldered by allegations of bribery and dubious procurements, ferrying of suspicious bags of money, and a lack of accountability.
These were brought to light during a consultative meeting held at Nsambya Sharing Hall by Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda. Themed “Redirecting FDC to its core mission,” Ssemujju assembled top party leaders including the then Vice President for Buganda, Erias Lukwago. Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye, the FDC deputy treasurer, was also present.
At the meeting, the group said the party president Amuriat and secretary general Nandala Mafabi were on a mission to deliver the party to President Museveni and NRM.
The group has since sought solace at former party president Dr. Kizza Besigye’s Katonga road office, hence the name Katonga faction.
