Uganda National Musicians Federation President Eddy Kenzo, whose real name is Edirisa Musuuza, led a delegation of musicians to meet President Yoweri Museveni.
The meeting, attended by over 100 musicians, took place at State House Entebbe on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. As is the norm in his meetings, the President preached the message of wealth creation to the artists. He challenged them to use their creativity to spread this message to the public.
According to the President, once all families start generating income, Uganda will be safely on a journey to development. His belief has been evident over the years as he promoted various programs such as the Four Acre Model.
“We had a good discussion on the rich history of our country’s politics and economy. As well as important discussions around copyright law and its implications. I have asked Eddy Kenzo to coordinate further discussions with technical experts as my advisor on creatives.” – President Museveni posted on X
Currently, the government is running the Parish Development Model and Emyooga programs to alleviate communities from poverty. The President believes that once artists add their voices to these programs, the government’s work will be made easier.
He also urged the musicians to put the country first in all their endeavors. Since the meeting was organized by the Commissioner of Patriotism in the Office of the President, Ms. Hellen Seku, President Museveni’s message also centered around patriotism. Ms. Seku was also tasked with organizing a patriotism boot camp for the entertainers.
The President warned them against participating in politics that don’t contribute to the country’s development. He particularly cautioned them against identity politics based on tribe and religion, warning that this could undo all the work and development of the NRM government.
Similarly, he pledged the government’s support towards the music industry. The meeting came just a day after Eddy Kenzo had been appointed Senior Presidential Advisor for the Creative Industry.
In his speech, Kenzo stressed the challenges artists face, including the lack of clear guidelines on their intellectual property. The musicians who attended the meeting included Bebe Cool, Jose Chameleone, Alien Skin, and Allan Toniks, among others. Other creatives included Anne Kansiime.
