Gagamel Entertainment boss Bebe Cool, whose real name is Moses Ssali, has lashed out at the public for calling Speaker of Parliament Anita Among corrupt.
The self-proclaimed Big Size expressed his defense of the Speaker while touring her new sports complex in her native Bukedea District. Over the past months, Parliament has been on the wrong end of public discourse as reports of corruption flooded the House. These were intensified by a citizen-led Parliamentary exhibition that accused Parliament Commissioners of allocating themselves UGX 1.7 billion as service awards.
Despite the High Court ruling in their favor last week, Speaker Among’s name has been clouded by the whole controversy, given that she chaired the allocation meeting.Similarly, when President Museveni delivered the State of the Nation Address in June, he blasted Parliament for corruption. The President revealed that he had unearthed a racket of corruption between MPs and officials at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
Since the President’s revelations, five MPs have been arrested on corruption-related charges. Additionally, the Speaker and her husband, MP Moses Magogo, have been sanctioned by the United States and United Kingdom governments for alleged corruption.
However, according to Bebe Cool, all this is a public witch hunt because Parliament passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023. Bebe Cool called upon all critics of the Speaker to visit Bukedea District and witness her work.
Bebe Cool defends Among
“I’ve shown you the facilities Speaker Anita Among has established in Bukedea. This lady has been in Parliament for less than three years, yet she’s already built a school, stadium, and sports arena. All these on her own, without government support. So, where does the corruption issue arise?” Bebe Cool said.
According to Bebe Cool, calling the Speaker corrupt undermines the investments she has made in her home district. He revealed that most of the labor for constructing the sports complex was sourced from Bukedea, thus directly supporting the natives. Amidst calls for the arrest and resignation of the Speaker by a section of youth, Bebe warned that these actions would deprive Bukedea of more developments.
“If Anita Among is imprisoned for alleged corruption, what happens to the thousands of people benefiting directly from her initiatives? How about the millions in Eastern Uganda who are reaping the benefits of her work? Is she truly corrupt, or is this backlash because she signed the anti-gay bill?” Bebe Cool added.
Today, President Museveni opened the sports complex in Bukedea ahead of the 21st edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Association (FEASSA) games. The event was attended by participating student athletes from all the East African nations, as well as politicians and religious leaders.
