Azawi Blasts Fellow Artists for Silence on Critical Issues Affecting Fans

Ugandan musician Azawi, real name Priscilla Zawedde, has lashed out at fellow artists for their silence on issues affecting their fans.

The outspoken artist expressed her disappointment at other artists on Saturday morning while appearing on a space on X. The space, hosted by former Vision Group boss Robert Kabushenga, was centered around this week’s anti-corruption protests in Kampala.

On Tuesday, July 23rd, a number of youth activists hit the roads to march to Parliament. The march was in protest of the repeated corruption allegations dogging Parliament. Currently, up to five MPs are on remand in Luzira Prison over corruption-related charges.

Unfortunately for the activists, police meted out force, arresting 104 of them. 100 of these have since been charged in court and remanded to Luzira and Kitalya Prisons.

Azawi disappointed with artists

Azawi, who has been vocal about corruption, wondered why other artists haven’t joined the public. She particularly called out Jose Chameleone, Bebe Cool, and fellow Swangz Avenue artist Winnie Nwagi. According to the Masavu hit maker, the only way they can pay back their fans is by amplifying their plight.

“At one point, I saw our President at the fight against corruption as an easy one. I’m afraid, he needs to take it more seriously. There has to be some ruthlessness when handling this situation. Why is our country spending like it’s rich yet we are broke?” – Azawi.

Similarly, she also called out government entities for neglecting the youth of the nation. She cited herself as an example, having been jobless after acquiring a Bachelor of Commerce degree. The Swangz Avenue gem noted that hadn’t it been for music, she would be in the gutters.

“If these old people could steal our youth (age), they’d steal it too but don’t worry, you have the benefit of age on your side. You’ll get a chance to step in and show them how it’s done.” – Azawi.
