Job Details

Under the direction of the WASH Engineer, the Water Technician is responsible for day-to-day monitoring of water quality systems under their jurisdiction, in accordance with Water Mission standards. They will implement hardware components in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program, including the operation and maintenance of existing water systems. This position is based in the refugee operation in Yumbe or Arua Districts.

As a key staff member, the Technician nurtures a biblical worldview culture throughout the organization, promoting excellence and integrity in all work, and creating an environment for solving problems and achieving solutions consistent with Water Mission’s mission, vision, values, and standards. This is a full-time, fixed-term contract with the possibility of yearly renewals.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor water quality in accordance with Water Mission standards.
  • Operate and maintain water systems to ensure the supply of safe water.
  • Oversee and support system operators in their duties.
  • Implement technical project aspects according to Water Mission standards.
  • Conduct field inspections, site assessments, water quality tests, and collect water samples.
  • Document and report water quality data.
  • Conduct batch chlorination when necessary and ensure systems are supplied with chlorine.
  • Maintain stock levels of water treatment chemicals and testing reagents.
  • Train local water system operators on operation and maintenance.
  • Install water system components including pumps, motors, inverters, chlorinators, and solar panels.
  • Respond promptly to water system breakdowns.
  • Ensure safety and cleanliness of pump stations and reservoirs.
  • Coordinate with local leaders and hygiene promotion teams.
  • Represent Water Mission in WASH coordination meetings.
  • Keep updated records of water system components and documentation.
  • Report on projects, including photography and testimonials.
  • Ensure timely fuel supply for system generators and compile fuel reports.
  • Undertake any additional duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Relationship and Alignment:
    • Alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity.
  • Education Qualification and Experience:
    • National Diploma in Water Engineering or Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering.
    • 3+ years’ experience in water treatment and supply in humanitarian settings.
    • Personal growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
    • Willingness to reside in West Nile.
    • Valid Uganda Driver’s License.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
    • Problem-solving and organizational skills.
    • Good analytical, photography, and documentation skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and high integrity.
    • Ability to travel to remote locations within Uganda.
    • Legal authorization to work in Uganda.

Level of Education: Associate Degree

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership.
  • Monitor water quality in accordance with Water Mission standards.
  • Operate and maintain water systems to ensure safe water supply.
  • Oversee and support system operators.
  • Implement technical project aspects according to Water Mission standards.
  • Supervise the construction of structures like treatment houses, tank bases, and solar racks.
  • Install water system components, including pumps, filters, and solar systems.
  • Conduct field inspections and site assessments.
  • Maintain regular contact with supervisors and stakeholders.
  • Perform engineering tasks such as hydraulic design calculations and structural drawings.
  • Conduct engineering fieldwork and design.
  • Design water systems, including source, pumping, treatment, storage, and distribution.
  • Conduct community assessments, water quality, and quantity testing.
  • Install storage tanks, distribution lines, and tap stands.
  • Train local system operators on O&M interventions.
  • Report on projects, including photography and testimonials.
  • Monitor stock levels of water quality consumables.
  • Disseminate water quality results and feedback.
  • Ensure the cleaning of water storage reservoirs.
  • Perform risk assessments and sanitary surveys.
  • Test water quality and monitor water systems.
  • Communicate professionally and courteously.
  • Provide timely and accurate documentation, including timesheets and logs.
  • Steward equipment and resources carefully.
  • Represent Water Mission in sector-related activities.

Requirements:

  • Relationship and Alignment:

  • Education Qualification and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Water/Water Resources, Civil, or Environmental Engineering.
    • 3+ years’ experience in water treatment and supply, and O&M in humanitarian settings.
    • Willingness to reside in West Nile.
    • Valid Uganda Rider’s/Driver’s License with 2+ years’ experience riding motorbikes.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
    • Problem-solving and organizational skills.
    • Good analytical, photography, and documentation skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and high integrity.
