About Global Health Uganda (GHU)

Global Health Uganda (GHU) is a registered not-for-profit, limited liability company with the mission to promote child health by conducting and facilitating quality and relevant research in child health, neurodevelopment, and interventions. In collaboration with Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Kampala, Uganda, and Indiana University, GHU is conducting a study entitled ‘Severe Malaria and Risk to the Brain (SMART Brain)’. This study will be conducted at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and screen patients for possible enrolment into the study according to the protocol.
  • Obtain informed consent from caregivers of eligible participants.
  • Counsel and explain study procedures to caregivers of study participants.
  • Work with the study Medical Officer to enroll eligible participants.
  • Complete study CRFs accurately in compliance with trial procedures/SOPs and GCP standards.
  • Ensure study participants’ safety and privacy, data integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Provide emergency nursing care for study participants.
  • Participate in routine clinical care of non-study participants on the wards.
  • Collect appropriate study samples/specimens from participants as per protocol and SOPs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Degree in Nursing (registered Nurse) or equivalent, registered with the relevant national bodies.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subject Protection (HSP) training with certificates.
  • Previous clinical research experience is an added advantage.
  • Fluent in verbal and written English, as well as Lusoga.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-discipline, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work well in a team.
  • Experience and willingness to live and work in a rural environment.

  • Provide emergency and continuous medical care to study participants.
  • Consent and explain study procedures to caregivers and older children.
  • Collect appropriate samples from study participants and ensure proper delivery to labs.
  • Document and report any adverse events.
  • Train and supervise study nurses.
  • Participate in routine clinical care of non-study participants on the wards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Bachelor’s in Surgery.
  • Fluent in verbal and written English, as well as Lusoga.
  • Proven Good Clinical Practices (GCP) training and a 2024 Annual practicing license.
  • Previous clinical research experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Teamworking skills.
  • Time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Willingness to keep up to date with current malaria information and research.
