Job Summary:

The Protection Assistant – Child Protection will manage day-to-day child protection activities in Rhino Camp and Imvepi under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader. Responsibilities include case management, child protection training, community awareness, and engagement with para-social workers, adolescent groups, and caregivers.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordination:

  • Develop and strengthen relationships with agencies at the field level.
  • Represent DRC in relevant field-based thematic meetings.
  • Coordinate with field staff of other DRC sectors and organizations.
  • Participate in regular sector and in-house coordination meetings.
  • Maintain and strengthen networks with other service providers at the camp level.
  • Participate in Child Protection inter-agency Coordination meetings.
  • Work closely with other protection sub-sectors.
  • Strengthen referral systems and networks of psycho-social service providers.
  • Design child protection prevention activities/interventions with partners.
  • Conduct training for Para-Social Workers, parents, and children on CP thematic areas.

Project Development, Implementation, and Reporting:

  • Provide case management services for vulnerable children.
  • Identify and document vulnerable children and update cases in ProGres.
  • Conduct BIDs and BIAs assessments for vulnerable children.
  • Provide direct services and material support.
  • Conduct referrals and follow-ups for children at risk.
  • Conduct alternative care placements for UACs and assess their needs.
  • Identify and support potential caregivers for UASCs.
  • Sensitize parents/caregivers on their roles in early child development and protection.
  • Conduct home visits to foster care homes.
  • Facilitate foster parent training on child rights and parenting.
  • Support para-social workers through mentorship and technical backstopping.
  • Develop advocacy points based on situation and risk assessments.
  • Form adolescent groups to enhance community engagement in Child Protection prevention work.

Staff Development and Management:

  • Provide technical and programmatic leadership for Para-Social Workers and DRC community-based structures.
  • Uphold DRC’s code of conduct and principles of accountability.

Communication/Reporting:

  • Contribute to drafting quality and timely weekly and monthly reports.
  • Guide Para-Social Workers in drafting and sharing activity reports.

Logistics/Finance:

  • Plan and coordinate logistics and field movements.
  • Support Protection Officers/Team Leaders in monitoring financial commitments and expenditures.
  • Comply with DRC/DDG procedures for security, finance, logistics, HR, and administration.
  • Adhere to donor and internal DRC reporting and accountability policies.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Implement, monitor, and evaluate child protection-related projects and interventions.
  • Document and disseminate project successes and challenges.
  • Assist in participatory needs/vulnerability and capacity assessments.

Additional Tasks:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • University degree in social sciences, community development, guidance and counseling, or related fields.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with children and vulnerable communities, and in protection programming or child protection advocacy.
  • Professional training in Best Interest Procedure processes, CP case management, and CP community-based protection.
  • Knowledge of ProGres V4 CP module.
  • Experience in protection interventions in refugee operations and wide child protection.
  • Experience working with UN or NGOs.
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle.
  • Knowledge of local languages spoken by South Sudanese and Congolese refugees is an asset.
