The Need

For over 25 years, IJM has been at the forefront of protecting vulnerable people from violence. Our Justice System Strengthening Projects have consistently reduced slavery and violence significantly. As we aim to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking three Community Engagement Officers to support the design and delivery of our community engagement strategy in Uganda. These officers will engage with local leaders to mobilize communities against violence, particularly violence against women and girls (VAWG). They will also develop initiatives to build capacities among local councils, religious and cultural leaders, and survivor leaders to respond effectively to VAWG.

Positions Available:

  • Moroto (2) – Reports to the Project Coordinator, Karamoja
  • Tororo (1) – Reports to the Senior Manager Advocacy and Community Engagement

These positions are only available for candidates with the right to work in Uganda.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and enhance the impact of local survivor networks.
  • Maintain key relationships with government and non-government actors.
  • Implement community engagement activities with religious and traditional leaders.
  • Develop and implement strategies to address harmful practices perpetuating VAWG.
  • Review and coordinate training curriculums for Local Council Courts.
  • Design mentorship strategies for local leaders to effect change in community norms.
  • Conduct community dialogues, radio activities, and awareness-raising interventions.
  • Form and maintain survivor groups and implement empowerment initiatives.
  • Plan, implement, monitor, and report on community engagement activities.
  • Develop referral networks and linkages for survivor support.
  • Strengthen IJM Uganda’s network with faith-based groups to combat VAWG.
  • Coordinate linkages between informal and formal justice system actors.
  • Document best practices and stories of significant change.
  • Support media engagements and develop advocacy materials.
  • Participate in training local leaders and community awareness campaigns.
  • Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
  • Track and analyze budgets for community engagement components.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, community development, community psychology, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 4 years professional experience in community and behavioral change work, particularly with survivors’ groups, cultural and religious leaders.
  • Experience in capacity building, mentorship, and networking.
  • Familiarity with justice service providers and safeguarding practices.
  • Valid driver’s license with no incidents.
  • Fluency in English and local languages in Karamoja.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
