We work alongside people with disabilities and individuals experiencing extreme hardship, acting and bearing witness to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.

HI in Uganda is currently implementing development and humanitarian interventions in six sectors/thematic areas: Livelihood, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Physical and Functional Rehabilitation, Inclusive Education, Inclusive Health, and Inclusive Humanitarian Action (IHA) to improve access and quality of services to the most vulnerable people including persons with disabilities promoting a more inclusive and harmonious society.

Project Background: The Humanitarian Services for Very Vulnerable Persons aims to improve access to humanitarian services for very vulnerable persons, including Women and Men, Girls and Boys, with disabilities in Nakivale refugee settlement. The project will provide the most vulnerable refugees with physical and functional rehabilitation and mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS). Nakivale settlement, located in the Southwest of Uganda, is one of the three settlements including Kyangwali and Rwamanja receiving refugees arriving from the DRC.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver comprehensive physiotherapy services (30%):
    • Conduct physical and functional assessments.
    • Develop individualized treatment and rehabilitation plans.
    • Monitor and adjust treatment plans, and perform re-assessments.
    • Provide home exercise programs and facilitate discharge.
    • Identify and provide assistive devices, and coordinate referrals.
  2. Oversee rehabilitation unit operations (30%):
    • Manage daily operations of the rehabilitation unit.
    • Collaborate with CBR workers for home-based rehabilitation follow-up.
    • Promote disability inclusion and raise awareness within the community.
    • Identify challenges and propose solutions with the project manager.
  3. Provide efficient service delivery (15%):
    • Plan and organize daily, weekly, and monthly activities.
    • Contribute to weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports.
    • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team and external stakeholders.
  4. Oversee data collection, analysis, and reporting (15%):
    • Maintain comprehensive patient records and compile reports.
    • Participate in data collection for evaluations and assessments.
    • Develop MSC stories to highlight project impact.
    • Ensure adherence to HI code of conduct, security rules, and donor visibility.
  5. Emergency preparedness and response (5%):
    • Contribute to the program’s emergency preparedness actions.
    • Adapt work modality during an emergency to support HI’s humanitarian response.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

Education & Experience:

  • Mandatory:
    • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy.
    • At least 3 years of clinical experience in a hospital.
    • At least 5 years’ experience in orthopedic and neurologic case management.
    • Experience working for an NGO, especially in humanitarian settings.

  • Core Physiotherapy Skills:
    • Clinical expertise, therapeutic interventions, patient management, case management.
    • Public health and safety, mental health, disability expertise, refugee sector familiarity.
    • Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
  • Humanitarian and Contextual Skills:
    • Adherence to humanitarian principles and standards, intercultural competence.
    • Conflict resolution, gender equality, child protection, disability inclusion.
    • Teamwork, time management, problem-solving, adaptability, communication.
  • Management Skills:
    • Project cycle management, MEL, report writing, computer proficiency.
    • Language skills, data management, program development, training, and education.
