Job Purpose:
The Duty Editors will oversee and coordinate the daily news gathering operations. You will be responsible for ensuring that news reports are well-researched, up-to-date, and meet established editorial objectives, journalistic ethics, and house style, all while being delivered within set deadlines.

Main Responsibilities:

• Deliver daily news, including breaking news.
• Assign stories to reporters across NMGU platforms and prioritize coverage.
• Review stories to ensure they align with editorial objectives, house style, and journalistic ethics.
• Evaluate news for authenticity and check sources.
• Address legal and ethical issues in news copy and monitor reporters’ productivity and performance.
• Ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality of news content across print, broadcast, online, and multimedia platforms.
• Collaborate with the audience engagement team to enhance reader interaction and participation.
• Monitor audience feedback and incorporate it into editorial decision-making.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Academic: University Degree in Mass Communication or a related field from an accredited institution. Professional Diploma in Journalism is preferred.
• Experience: At least 5 years of relevant journalism experience, including 3 years at a supervisory level, and experience as a News Editor with a solid understanding of media.

• Ability to meet deadlines while thinking creatively about new storytelling methods.
• Excellent decision-making and prioritization skills.
• Highly organized, capable of managing multiple stories simultaneously.

• Understanding of content distribution across all platforms with knowledge of digital and data distribution.
• Knowledgeable in media law and content types including photo, video, and graphical journalism.
• Digital and data literate with business acumen.
• Motivational leader and coach with excellent organizational skills.
