Former Uganda Cranes captain Andrew Mwesigwa has launched a fundraising drive for the construction of a standard football complex at his secondary school.
Fondly referred to as Andy, Mwesigwa made headlines last week when he revealed that his business was not safe due to unserviced loans. Andy, who appealed for a government bailout, reasoned that his investments were for the good of the community.
Andy’s school, the Andrew Mwesigwa School (AMESCO) is located in Bugwanya village, Wakiso district. It took part in this year’s National Schools Sports Competitions playing football. However, Andy Mwesigwa believes their performance would improve with a standard complex.
It is with this background that he invites well-wishers to help him achieve his goal. Andy Mwesigwa school fundraising day is set for Sunday, 11th August 2024, at the school premises.
“I appeal to all Ugandans, sports personalities, well-wishers, and companies to come and join hands together. We need funds to help refurbish the school, construct a football complex, and buy a school bus. This school was started in 2018 and a few years later, we had the COVID-19 pandemic that held us back.” said Andy Mwesigwa.
He announced plans for an exhibition game between musicians and ex-internationals during the fundraising. The artists will be led by BET winner Eddy Kenzo. Kenzo is on record for stating that he was part of record league champions Sports Club Villa’s roster.
Andy Mwesigwa expects President’s support
Mwesigwa also expects President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to make time for his fundraiser.
A reputable organizing committee was named for the event and includes the following. Legendary actor and entertainer Abbey Mukiibi will chair the committee. He will be deputized by former Uganda international and Proline FC founder Mujib Kasule. Hussein Kato is in charge of finances, and Hardware World’s Simon Ssekankya is the chief advisor. Meanwhile, KCCA Football Club chief executive officer Anisha Muhoozi is an executive committee member.
Other members include coordinators Vicent Ssekamatte and Ruben Luyombo. Nation Media journalists Samuel Mpoza and David Lumansi are in charge of publicity.
Andy Mwesigwa captained Uganda for over a decade. Over his 13 years as the national team skipper, the Cranes made Namboole Stadium a fortress, beating Africa’s giants. In these memorable days for the Ugandan football faithful, Mwesigwa was a constant towering figure at the heart of the Cranes defense.
