The Directorate of Traffic and Road safety has unvailed that 37 individuals lost their lives in different accidents on Ugandan roads over the Easter weekend
The sum includes nine relatives including two children who died in a deadly accident on Good Friday after a Toyota Alphard vehicle they were driving in slammed into a fuel truck at Kinono trading Lwengo district.
While tending to Reporters on Tuesday morning at the police headquarters , Traffic Police spokesperson, ASP Faridah Nampiima said 76 accidents were recorded between April seventh (Good Friday) and April tenth (Easter Monday).
Out of these, 28 were deadly, 40 were serious and 8 were minor accidents.
“There were 113 casualties out of these accidents, 37 kicked the bucket and 76 sustained serious wounds.” Ms Nampiima said as she gave all relevant information of the classification of passengers who died in the accidents enrolled.
“For the driver, One driver died and 8 were harmed, 10 motorcyclists lost lives , 22 got serious wounds, one pedal cyclist died and 2 got harmed, Three passengers on motorbikes passed on and 15 sustained serious wounds, 2 Travellers in Taxi’s passed on and 4 sustained serious injuries, 8 passengers in different vehicles died and 12 sustained wounds and 12 pedestrians likewise kicked the bucket bringing the absolute number of the dead to 37,” said Ms Nampiima.
She attributed the accidents to overspeeding which brought about four deadly accidents and overspeeding (bringing about 29 accidents where 11 were lethal), unknown causes (where 10 accidents were recorded, six being lethal and three serious), and abrupt turning.
The accidents during the Easter season likewise saw two travelers in taxis die and four others harmed though one cyclist passed on and two were harmed.
As per the Yearly crime Report 2022, the nation enlisted 20,394 instances of street mishaps in 2022 cases with 17,443 recorded the earlier year.
Out of each 100 accidents, 22 individuals kicked the bucket while 61% of all accidents were due to reckless driving, the police said
