KCCA Gets Greenlight To Dump Garbage In Nkumba

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and Entebbe Municipality have reached a consensus to dump the city garbage at the Nkumba dumping site.

The agreement comes just days after the leadership in Entebbe stopped city trucks from dumping garbage in Nkumba. This follows the tragedy that befell the Kiteezi landfill, where the city dumps garbage. On Saturday morning, a section of garbage in the Kiteezi landfill gave way, burying houses and other property. KCCA has so far reported 22 deaths related to the incident.

“I have always seen the Lord Mayor [Erias Lukwago] talking about observing protocol and more of that, but how do you order the trucks from Kampala to come and dump garbage in Entebbe without notifying anyone? This place is very small to be dumped in by over 27 tons of garbage from Kampala.” Katabi Town Council Mayor Ronald Kalema Bassamulukele explained on Monday.

Nkumba dumping site is located along the shores of Lake Victoria. This location also informed prior rejection by the residents and Entebbe leaders. They said dumping city garbage would be hazardous to the fishing community and other aquatic activities.Both leaders and residents of Entebbe had cited the lack of capacity to host a significant demand from the capital.

However, following engagements between the leadership of both Kampala and Entebbe, a consensus has been reached. KCCA, represented by Lukwago and his Deputy Mayor Doreen Nyanjula, among other officials, held a closed-door meeting with Katabi Town Council. Following the meeting, both parties announced that they had given KCCA the green light to dump in Nkumba.

However, the Authority is expected to follow stringent protocols or risk revocation of the license.

Conditions for dumping garbage in Nkumba

KCCA trucks will use Kasenyi Road, leaving Nkumba Main Road due to road safety reasons.

The Lord Mayor has been instructed to deploy more tractors to clear rubbish at Nkumba.

The Authority will also have to provide water bowsers along Kasenyi Road to deal with dust.

“Our engineers, starting tomorrow, will be on the ground to assess what needs to be done. We thank area leaders for allowing us to use the place, even if we have been given one month. The KCCA’s executive will sit to determine further engagements.” Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago said.
