HI in Uganda is currently implementing development and humanitarian interventions in six sectors/thematic areas: Livelihood, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Physical and Functional Rehabilitation, Inclusive Education, Inclusive Health, and Inclusive Humanitarian Action (IHA) to improve access and quality of services to the most vulnerable people, including persons with disabilities, promoting a more inclusive and harmonious society.
Project Background:
The INSPIRE (Inclusive Norms, Support, and Promoting Inclusive Reproductive Empowerment) project aims to sustainably enhance access to reproductive health rights and services for persons with disabilities in the Nakivale refugee settlement, one of the largest refugee settlements in the world.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure planning and field coordination of project activities, especially in case management and protection, with internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in planning, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluating social work activities in the community.
- Participate in weekly or monthly HI activity planning meetings.
- Develop daily, weekly, and monthly field activity plans.
- Participate in field activities with the project team.
- Implement field activities in collaboration with other consortium partners, respecting the referral pathway.
- Conduct weekly case management meetings with other project staff to ensure all services are received and followed up to closure.
- Conduct holistic assessments of children identified by project therapists in need of protection support.
- Act as caseworker: assess the needs of beneficiaries and their families, develop case management profiles, and create individual/familial action plans.
- Coordinate an inclusive case management plan and maintain ongoing contact with relevant actors linked to the child/caregiver’s needs.
- Manage and implement activities to prevent and respond to child violence and gender-based violence.
- Participate in data collection, reporting, and other MEAL activities of the project.
- Document and report protection concerns to the line manager.
- Ensure confidentiality and respect all guidelines and documentation within the project.
- Contribute to the organization of the weekly plan within the multidisciplinary team.
- Produce weekly activity reports and contribute to project reports using HI Uganda MEAL templates.
- Know, understand, apply, and respect HI’s code of conduct, ethics, rules, and policies.
- Contribute to the program’s emergency preparedness actions and adapt work modality during emergencies to contribute to HI’s effective humanitarian response.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Education & Experience:
- Honors Degree in Social Work and Social Administration (SWASA) or related fields such as MHPSS, community development, Community-Based Rehabilitation, and other disability studies.
- At least three (3) years of experience as a social worker in both hospital and community settings and with children.
- Prior experience as a caseworker, especially in child protection and/or gender-based violence activities.
- Experience working in the fields of disability, inclusion, access to services, and social development.
- Experience working in the refugee context.
Personal Skills & Technical Competencies:
- Effective communication with a wide range of people, including parents and children with disabilities, and other service providers.
- Develop an enabling relationship, promoting the self-determination of the supported person.
- Practical knowledge of the social work environment.
- Critical and creative thinking and decision-making skills.
- Understanding of inclusive case management and its importance.
- Awareness of inequalities and social obstacles faced by children with disabilities or developmental delays and their caregivers.
- Proficiency in the local language of the area is a plus.
- Ability to manage stress and emotions, adapt to cultural differences, and work with integrity.
- Effective interpersonal relationships and sensitivity to gender and disability issues.
