Kituuma Justifes Police Deployment At NUP Offices

Uganda Police Spokesperson Afande Kituuma Rusoke has told National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership that they don’t have absolute rights.

The Police mouthpiece was reacting to the Police’s sealing off the NUP Kavule headquarters on Monday morning. By press time, various security agencies had blocked access to the opposition party’s headquarters. The police blockade affected a routine press conference by the NUP.

Every Monday, NUP addresses the media at their headquarters on events within their party. However, on Monday 23rd July, the party leaders found mean security presence at their premises. A number of supporters and leaders have since been held by police. These include Mityana MP Francis Zaake and vice president Lina Zedriga.

NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has since lashed out at the police, accusing them of acting with impunity to frustrate their activities.

Kituuma advises NUP

On the contrary, Afande Kituuma says that the Police were acting in the greater good of the public. He wondered why the political party would invite the entire public for a press conference.

“They called their members of Parliament which is fine. NUP also called councillors and that’s okay. They called pressure groups. All the supporters of NUP were called for a press conference at Kavule.” Afande Kituuma Rusoke.

According to Afande Kituuma, it’s unrealistic to call all supporters of a political party to a small piece of land. He said police had to take heightened measures so as to stop mayhem in a crowded Kavule.

Kituuma also cautioned the NUP leadership that they’ll keep getting frustrated by the security agencies if they fail to recognize the rights of other members of the public.

“The longer you fail to recognize the rights of others, the longer it will take you to enjoy your own. You need to balance the equation. Similarly, you need to understand that you don’t have absolute rights.” Police PRO.

He asked the NUP to collaborate with the police in all their activities so that they don’t affect other people’s business.NUP has previously held a number of events at their offices that attracted a large audience.
