National Unity Platform (NUP) has announced the commencement of their second phase of countrywide tours in Bundibugyo district.
“We are hitting the road again. The revolutionary train begins its nationwide journey with the cocoa-rich district of Bundibugyo. See you there. Here is the detailed program of our tour.” NUP stated.
The Kavule faithful will travel to Bundibugyo on Monday, 15th July, amidst guidelines from Uganda Police.
Their announcement comes just a day after the party’s leadership held a meeting with the Police over the touring timetable. The Thursday meeting was attended by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi and Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya. They preached the party’s adherence to the law and vowed to ensure their convoys are peaceful.
NUP warned by Police
The Uganda Police Force halted the National Unity Platform’s consultative activities on 31st May 2024. This was due to a fatal accident at St. Lawrence Maya, along the Kampala-Masaka highway, during their procession towards Masaka. Police attributed the accident that resulted in the death of three people to NUP’s negligence.
They cited overloading of vehicles and inconsiderate use of vehicles on the road. Particularly, Police were concerned with carrying passengers on vehicle rooftops.Police’s Deputy Spokesperson Nabakka S. Claire warned NUP to stop carrying people on motor vehicle rooftops.
Additionally, NUP was warned about overloading vehicles and overspeeding, as these are offenses. Similarly, Police also abolished moving in motor convoys from Kampala to upcountry locations. In previous tours by the NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, it has been a common occurrence to see his convoy snake from Makerere Kavule or his Magere residence to a destination over 100 km away.
Police also warned NUP about harassing or provoking security personnel on duty. They also made it clear that regulating traffic is the mandate of the traffic police.
Both Police and NUP promised to continue engaging so as to make the activities smooth.
