Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba has dropped Fred Enanga as Police Spokesperson.
Enanga leaves as the longest-serving police spokesperson for a promotion in Interpol Uganda. Enanga joins Interpol as the deputy director.
Over the last couple of years, Fred Enanga has become a household name in Uganda due to his job. Casting a calm figure, the soft-spoken police officer had vehemently defended the Police and its actions whenever called upon.
Due to his work, he has had a mixed relationship with the general public as some applaud his brilliance while others question his honesty. However, what cannot be refuted is the dedication with which he has served the police.
Fred Enanga police career
Enanga, an economist by profession, joined the police in 2001. Following his posting, he served as an Operations Officer in Entebbe. As a cadet, he impressed during his tour of duty in Entebbe and was promoted to Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) at Natete Police Station.
At the time of his posting to Natete, the areas of Kitebi and Busega were grappling with high crime rates. However, during his six months at Natete, the crime rates were reduced, earning him a promotion to CID officer of Ssembabule District. After Ssembabule, his next assignment took him to Lira Municipality.
While in Lira, Enanga doubled as the Public Relations Officer for CID. However, it was not until he was posted at CID headquarters in Kibuli that he ventured into management. Here, he briefly headed the Economic Crimes Department before being transferred to Lands Police.
Thirteen years after joining the force, Fred Enanga was appointed spokesperson after being designated as Commissioner of Police. He served his first stint for two years between 2014 and 2016. In 2016, former IGP Kale Kayihura dropped Enanga, replacing him with then Assistant Inspector of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Following Kaweesi’s gruesome murder in 2017, Asan Kasingye took over the mantle for a year. Kasingye was replaced by Emilian Kayima, who cued in Enanga’s return. In 2019, Fred Enanga bounced back to the spokesperson office that he occupied for five years. Comprehensively, Fred Enanga has served as Police spokesperson for seven years.
He has been replaced by Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituuma Rusoke. Afande Rusoke previously headed the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) law enforcement team.
