Hamson Obua: NRM Doesnt Condone Corruption

Hamson Obua

Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua has distanced the National Resistance Movement (NRM) from statements by party members that seemed to condone corruption.

While speaking to the media on Thursday afternoon Obua stressed that the NRM doesn’t condone the vice.

Last weekend, the speaker led a delegation of MPs in the Lwengo district for the launch of the Sentayo Foundation. While speaking to the Lwengo residents, Speaker Among confirmed her support for their embattled woman MP, Cissy Namujju, who is facing corruption charges. Rakai Woman MP Juliet Kinyamatama and Kasambya County’s David Kabanda were other MPs who pledged their allegiance to their embattled colleagues.

However, according to Obua, this shouldn’t worry the public. He cited the case of three MPs who are facing corruption charges over shs 164 billion cooperative funds. The MPs are Paul Akamba of Busiki County, Michael Mawanda of Igara East and Ignatius Mudimi Wamakuyu of Elgon County. The prosecution alleges that the duo caused the government a loss of up to shs 164 billion in compensation for cooperative societies said to have been affected by war.

A boastful Obua said this could not be possible without the report by Parliamnet’s Trade Committee in December 2023. The Trade Committee is headed by Mwine Mpaka who is an NRM MP. Obua said MPs like Mpaka and the members of the committee that are mainly NRM exonerate the party.

No NRM Parliamentary Cause meeting

Obua also quelled rumours of a looming NRM Parliamentary Caucus meeting to discuss the plight if the arrested MPs. He confirmed that this won’t happen as the party lets the wheels of justice turn.

Additionally, Obua sent out a warning to NRM cadres and MPs to stop involving in corruption, He confirmed that more arrests of MPs should be expected as the corruption racket at Parliament is big.

“You have seen this before, you are seeing this now, you are yet to see more. Are doubting that NRM can send its cadres to Luzira[Prison] on corruption charges? I think the list is there.” Hamson Obua.
