Job Summary: The Agriculture Field Extension Officer/Agronomist will play a crucial role in enhancing the productivity and sustainability of vanilla farming. This involves conducting needs assessments, mobilizing farmers into groups, providing training in sustainable practices and land management, and facilitating linkages with essential services. Additionally, the role includes maintaining Farmer Field and Business Schools, organizing exchange visits, and participating in agricultural activities at sub-county and district levels.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct needs assessments and design engagement strategies for vanilla farmers and cooperatives.
  • Mobilize and profile vanilla farmers into production and marketing groups.
  • Train farmers in land use planning, sustainable agricultural practices, soil feeding technologies, and pest control.
  • Facilitate linkages between farmer groups and government extension services, financial institutions, and markets.
  • Establish and maintain Farmer Field and Business Schools as demonstration sites.
  • Organize exchange visits and study tours for farmers.
  • Attend sub-county and district level agricultural activities.
  • Provide weekly extension services and mentorship.
  • Track farmer progress and report to the Project Manager.

Reporting:

  • Submit accurate weekly and monthly reports to the Project Manager.
  • Document and report challenges encountered.
  • Report on impacts and linkages to farmer groups.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture Extension, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in extension work or agronomy, preferably in vanilla.
  • Knowledge of agronomy, agro-ecology, and participatory extension approaches.
  • Proficiency in English and local languages (Runyooro Rutooro and/or Runyankole Rukiiga/Lhukonzo/ Lubwiisi/Lwamba).
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills.
  • Motorcycle riding skills with a riding permit preferable.
