MP Sseggona Defends Commissioners Over Shs 1.7 Billion Service Awards

Medard Ssegona

Busiro East MP Medard Sseggona cushioned four Parliamentary Commissioners for receiving service awards worth shs 1.7 billion.

Hon Sseggona offered his defense to the embattled back bench Commissioners during a Thanksgiving ceremony for Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga in Masaka.

“It’s not true that the parliamentary commissioners allocated themselves the service award. The proposal was brought to Parliament, and it was passed,” Medard Sseggona said.

Sseggona MP castigated MPs led by Theodore Ssekikubo that are calling for the censure of the Commissioners. According to Sseggona, the entire Parliament should be blamed since it passed the budget.

Sseggona, who was particularly defensive of former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, wondered why he’s being crucified for a decision that benefitted various people, including former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga.

He also lashed out at his party, the National Unity Platform, for marginalizing Mpuuga.

According to Sseggona, the leadership in Kavuule frustrated the organization of the ceremony.

“I heard rumors that they were calling members, telling them they would be denied party cards if they attended Mpuuga’s Thanksgiving. I’m glad I wasn’t called, and if it’s true, then it’s absurd. Friendships go beyond politics,” Medard Sseggona said.

Genesis of trouble

The censure intends to achieve the removal of Esther Afoyochan (Zombo District Woman – NRM), Prossy Akampulira (Rubanda District Woman – NRM), Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central – NRM), and Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe – NUP) from their positions as members of the Parliamentary Commission.

The three NRM legislators took home Shs 400 million each, while the former Leader of the Opposition banked Shs 500 million in a one-off personal service award.

Mpuuga’s party, the National Unity Platform, has since taken drastic measures, including firing him from his position as Deputy President for the Buganda region.

Various political commentators have described the Thanksgiving ceremony in Kitovu, Masaka, as an event organized by Mpuuga to show that he still has strength in the district.

This comes barely a month after NUP Leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s mobilization drives paralyzed business in the city.
