Industrious defender Umar Lutalo has left Uganda Premier League champions Sports Club Villa, joining an exodus of a host of stars.
Lutalo joins league-winning captain Kenneth Ssemakula on the journey away from Villa.
The 20-year-old announced his departure from Villa in a heartfelt post on social media platform X.Lutalo leaves Villa after three seasons with the record champions.
He was instrumental as Villa ended a 20-year-old league drought to win last season.Lutalo’s surges down the left flank saw him score 8 goals in 18 matches.
In the post, Lutalo expressed his gratitude to Villa president Hajji Omar Mandela and his Executive Committee for their support during his time there.
“To my fellow players, it has been an absolute honor to share the pitch with such talented individuals. Your dedication, passion, and camaraderie have been the driving force behind our triumphs,” Lutalo said.
Lutalo’s departure follows in the footsteps of another first-team player, captain Kenneth Ssemakula. Ssemakula announced his departure from Villa last month raising concerns among fans.
Similarly, an attacking midfielder is reportedly set to complete a transfer from Villa to Egyptian side Cleopatra Ceramica.
This exodus has sparked concerns among the fans who are still in overdrive following the Championship win.
Back on the continent
Following their championship win, the Villa faithful had expected to embark on an African tour with their stars.
Having won the league, Villa will play in the preliminary rounds of CAF Champions League.
Aggregate victories over the two rounds would book a spot for coach Dusan Stojanovic’s side in the group stages with the continent’s elite.
Assistant coach Morley Byekwaso was first team player for Villa the last time they played in the Champions league.
A 3-0 aggregate against Eritrea’s Adulis in the preliminary round pitted the Jogoos against Egyptian giants Al Ahly. Byekwaso’s combative midfield display guided the Jogoos to 0-0 draw at Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium with the record African club champions before a 6-0 humiliation in the reverse fixture in Cairo.
SC Villa is yet to announce any new arrivals, but the departure of three first-team stars will test coach Dusan Stojanovic’s side.
The Jogoos will play at the CECAFA Kagame Cup next month and also represent Uganda at the CAF Champions League.
