PHOTOS! Inside Speaker Anita Among “UK House”

President Yoweri Museveni has instructed Speaker of Parliament Anita Among to clarify her ownership status of a house in the United Kingdom, which British authorities claim belongs to her.

In a letter dated May 23, confirmed by State House as authentic, President Museveni stated he had received conflicting information regarding Among’s earlier claims. The President’s letter highlights that, contrary to her previous statements, Among may indeed own the property in question.

“Do you own that house or are you renting it?” Museveni queried in the letter, without disclosing the source of his new information.

The property in question is Flat 4, Silk House, 7 Waterden Road, London, E20 3AL. Records from 192.com, a UK-based online directory, indicate that this leasehold flat or maisonette was sold on April 26, 2021, for £183,895 (approximately Shs891 million).

Further details about the property describe it as well-located in the heart of vibrant Stratford Central, near numerous shops and entertainment spots, including the new Westfield shopping center. However, ownership details are not currently available from the market site that listed the property, onthemarket.com.

This development adds to a series of allegations against Speaker Among. Previously, the UK government sanctioned her and two former ministers for corruption related to misappropriation of relief items intended for vulnerable Karamojong communities. Among has denied these allegations, dismissing them as politically motivated due to her opposition to homosexuality.

Following these sanctions, President Museveni directed the Inspector General of Government (IGG) and the Ethics Ministry to investigate the UK’s claims regarding Among’s alleged UK property. Museveni questioned the rationale behind Ugandan leaders investing abroad instead of in their developing home country.

Speaker Among is reported to have responded to the President, but details of her response remain unclear. Museveni has also tasked Foreign Affairs Minister Jeje Odongo to engage with the UK Government for further clarification on the property’s ownership. He is scheduled to meet with the Inspectorate of Government to discuss the matter.

Despite the UK’s sanctions, Museveni underscored the necessity of comprehensive evidence before making any judgment, stating that it would be unusual for the UK government to risk its reputation by providing or acting on unsubstantiated information.

As the situation unfolds, the Ugandan public and international observers await further details from the ongoing investigations, which will determine the veracity of the claims against Speaker Anita Among.
